Family Support

The longer we operate in Andong, the stronger the recognition that helping a child complete primary and secondary education means supporting the entire family unit. SCCO therefore involves parents in its programs, to give them the opportunity to support their children's education. In addition to the strategies aimed at children, the following programs are aimed to directly support families.

Education and income-generating activities for parents
The main goal is to offer women opportunities for their career, so that they (the mother) also can create a future for their children. In other words, SCCO aims to provide women with a stepping stone to the labor market. In order to do so, SCCO establishes a sewing centre where women learn how to produce clothing and handicraft and where the can earn an income for their family.

Workshops and counselling for parents
Many parents in Andong never had the chance to follow education themselves and therefore do not directly understand the added value. Furthermore, extreme poverty and social issues result in adults being addicted to gambling, alcohol and drugs. In order coach parents on the importance of education, SCCO organizes workshops and counselling. Other topics discussed also include practical life skills, such as how to deal with money, domestic violence, etc.

Emergency care
Families who are in great need for additional support can request (temporary) emergency care. Concretely, emergency care means that families can receive rice from us, support for paying rent or to take out a loan for equipment such as a fishing net. Besides, we support them in getting medical care in Phnom Penh when needed. While emergency care is provided, we are simultaneously looking for more sustainable strategies to ensure that the family can support itself in the future.
